A Small Town 4th of July Parade
I have long been fascinated by what I think of as “small culture”. American culture at a national level is an important component of our lives. But for most of us, the culture we experience and participate in locally is much more important. Even the time-honored 4th of July celebration is really the sum of thousands of local celebrations, all the same at one level, but all different based on local history and culture. This small culture binds us together with common purpose and values. So at least for a day or two, we come together to celebrate as one. This portfolio includes photos made over 12 years at the 4th of July Parade in my former hometown of Friday Harbor, WA, a small island community. You may wonder why one of the photos shows reenactors with American and British uniforms. During the “The Pig War”. The U.S. and British occupied San Juan Island from 1859-1872 and jointly celebrated our Independence Day and the Queen’s birthday. Thanks to all the people who made these parades happen and tolerated me photographing them.
