Burns & Burls in the Redwoods
Fire is a significant component of the Redwoods ecosystem. Over the long-life span of Redwoods, trees will be subjected to periodic fires that leave burn scars on affected trees, which manage to live on even when the core of the tree has burned away. Fire and other stressors also cause the formation of burls that cover damaged parts of a tree. These burls are fairly common and can be quite large and sculptural.
